    Validation of remotely-sensed evapotranspiration and NDWI using ground measurements at Riverlands, South Africa

    Quantification of the water cycle components is key to managing water resources. Remote sensing techniques and products have recently been developed for the estimation of water balance variables. The objective of this study was to test the reliability of LandSAF (Land Surface Analyses Satellite Applications Facility) evapotranspiration (ET) and SPOT-Vegetation Normalised Difference Water Index (NDWI) by comparison with ground-based measurements. Evapotranspiration (both daily and 30 min) was successfully estimated with LandSAF products in a flat area dominated by fynbos vegetation (Riverlands, Western Cape) that was representative of the satellite image pixel at 3 km resolution. Correlation coefficients were 0.85 and 0.91 and linear regressions produced R2 of 0.72 and 0.75 for 30 min and daily ET, respectively. Ground-measurements of soil water content taken with capacitance sensors at 3 depths were related to NDWI obtained from 10-daily maximum value composites of SPOT-Vegetation images at a resolution of 1 km. Multiple regression models showed that NDWI relates well to soil water content after accounting for precipitation (adjusted R2 were 0.71, 0.59 and 0.54 for 10, 40 and 80 cm soil depth, respectively). Changes in NDWI trends in different land covers were detected in 14-year time series using the breaks for additive seasonal and trend (BFAST) methodology. Sound quality is growing field of study that transversally influences the design of products and spaces, combining objective measures with subjective perception of people.     Analysis of histology-agnostic targets among soft tissue and bone sarcomas in the AACR GENIE database

Hence, histology-agnostic approvals can be of particular interest for the treatment of patients with soft tissue and bone sarcoma. Methods: We queried the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Project Genomics Evidence Neoplasia Information Exchange (GENIE) database Cohort v12.0-Public to investigate the prevalence of currently Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved and other potentially actionable histology-agnostic alterations in patients with soft tissue and bone sarcoma. Targets were identified by a literature review by the authors. Results are presented for each cohort identified in the GENIE database, namely: (1) soft tissue sarcoma (STS), (2) gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), (3) bone sarcoma, (4) uterine sarcoma, and (5) breast sarcoma. Results: We identified 7,512 samples of 6,955 patients with sarcoma in the AAACR GENIE database v12.0-Public. Molecular alterations that could lead to the clinical use of a currently approved histology-agnostic therapy were identified in 2.1% of sarcomas (2.6% STS, 1.3% GIST, 1.4% bone, 2.7% uterine, and 0% breast). In addition, 2.9% of patients could be eligible for future histology-agnostic approvals. These specific mutations, fusions, and amplifications occurred in multiple histotypes in all cohorts. Discussion: Exploring a public large-scale genomic database, we identified that 5% of patients with sarcoma could be eligible for current histology-agnostic FDA-approved drugs or future potential histology-agnostic indications. These actionable alterations were present in a wide variety of histologies in soft tissue and bone sarcomas, highlighting that next-generation sequencing can be considered for patients with advanced sarcoma to guide treatment strategies

    Physiological Measurement on Students’ Engagement In a Distributed Learning Environment

    Measuring students’ engagement in a distributed learning environment is a challenge. In particular, a teacher gives a lecture at one location, while at the same time the remote students watch the lecture through a display screen. In such situation, it is difficult for the teacher to know the reaction at the remote location. In this paper, we conducted a field study to measure students’ engagement by using galvanic skin response (GSR) sensors, where students simultaneously watched the lecture at the two locations. Our results showed the students’ GSR response was aligned with the surveys, which means that during a distributed learning environment, GSR sensors can be used as an indicator on students’ engagement. Furthermore, our user studies resulted in non-engaging student learning experiences that would be difficult obtained at a lab condition. Based on the findings, we found that the patterns of GSR readings were rather different when compared to the previous relevant studies, where users were engaged. In addition, we noticed that the density of GSR response at the remote location was higher when compared to the one at the lecture room. We believe that our studies are beneficial on physiological computing, as we first presented the patterns of GSR sensors on non-engaging user experiences. Moreover, as an alternative method, GSR sensors can be easily implemented in a distributed learning environment to provide feedback to teachers
